NAC SWIM CLUB IMPRESSES AT LEINSTER DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Dublin, Ireland: Wednesday, 2nd June 2010:   The NAC Swim Club emerged with seventeen medals from last weekend’s Leinster Division 1 Age Group Championships. This major long-course regional meet, which took place at the club’s home pool at the National Aquatic Centre produced six Leinster titles for the Junior Boys as well as four silver and seven bronze place positions overall.  The results come in the fifth year of the club’s existence and follow the implementation of a comprehensive swim programme by head coach and former Paralympian, David Malone.

Dean Power showed real versatility in the under 12 age group, by winning four medals with joint gold in the 200m Freestyle in a time of 2:21.63.  Power shared victory with Benjamin Doyle of Aer Lingus in a gripping dead heat.  He also took bronze in the 100m Butterfly in a time of 1:17.54, bronze in the 100m Breaststroke in 1:26.86 and bronze in the 100m backstroke in 1:19.70.  In the 14 year old age group, Alex Coultard scored double silver in the 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:58.81 and 200m backstroke in 2:37.92.

Commenting on the performances, head coach David Malone said:  “The Leinster Championships has proved to be a great showcase for our swimmers’ skills, across all age groups.  It’s great to see our athletes reach so many finals and seriously compete for medals.  This meet is great preparation for us for the upcoming Irish Age Groups and we’ll certainly be confident of delivering more fantastic performances in July.”

There were also strong performances by the girls last weekend with 14 year old breaststroke specialist, Shauna McGinley taking silver in the 100m event in a time of 1:27.97 and bronze in the 200m event in 3:09.12. Niamh Hurley also scored well in the 14 year old category taking bronze in the 100m freestyle in a time of 1:03.72.  She missed out on gold by just over one second.

In the distance events, Cillian Colvin took gold for the under 12s in the 1500m in a time of 20:02.39.   Cillian also finished runner-up Swimmer of the Meet in his age group, quite an achievement for the youngster who attends Dunboyne National School.  The boys 100m Freestyle relay squad in the 13-14 age group were as strong as ever, taking gold in 4:03.33, beating their previous best by almost four seconds.
